Digital Storytelling in the Elementary Classroom
- Indicate what assessment/evaluation traits you selected and why (in other words, what's your rationale as a critic of these stories?)
- Story – This is a digital story so story should be the most important.
- Content Understanding – If the person is taking a stance or educating, I want to know that they know what they’re talking about.
- Originality, Voice, Creativity – I am interested in how these stories use creativity to help our generation stay engaged.
- The extent to which these traits are successfully present and utilized in the given stories
- Story – The story wasn’t super on this one. I like stories where I learn something meaningful. I guess I learned about the project that the students did, what they enjoyed, and what they learned, but I won’t really use that information in my life.
- Content Understanding – There wasn’t any content to understand in this one. The teacher obviously understood the project that she assigned though. She had to understand what a digital story is and how to teach that to the students.
- Originality, Voice, Creativity – Voice was different on this one than any of the others I’ve watched. Usually there is one voice that tells the entire story. On this one the voices were of the kids who were interviewed and the author didn’t actually talk at all. I thought this was creative but might make it so it isn’t a true digital story.
- What these traits fail to capture about the selected story (that is, what other characteristics of the story are noteworthy, and why?)
- I think the plethora of interviews was notable. I haven’t seen a digital story like this before so I liked that aspect of this video. It was interesting to see how the students piggy backed on what the student before them said. You could tell who the leaders of the class were based on what certain students said and then what the ones following that person said.
- Based upon your trait evaluation, what modifications and changes to this digital story might improve aspects of narrative, production, media usage, and/or audience engagement?
- The author should probably speak for him or herself so that I know a little bit about the author. I don’t even know if the author is male or female. I also didn’t know what the point of showing the dancing at the end was and what that had to do with the digital story.
