The New Digital Storytelling – Chapter 7 – Gaming: Storytelling on a Large scale
- What are your main insights and ideas from the given L&K chapter?
- I liked the definition of stories that this chapter cited. It said that stories are “For a given audience, a story is a sequence of content existing in one medium or more, which engages that audience with emotion and meaning.” This seems concise but it really is saying a lot. The audience has to all be engaged in the same medium and they have to be effected on an emotional level. It really hits home that stories need to engage a person’s emotions. When I write (and even when I read) I want to affect the audience on an emotional level. I have to get the audience to care about the characters.
- What unique terminology, jargon, buzzwords, and other concepts appear in this reading that required your careful attention and definition? What are your interpretations of these words and concepts?
- I actually haven’t played any of the games that this section mentioned so trying to understand the differences and similarities in the games along with trying to understand the points that the author was trying to make was a challenge with this reading. I had to try and keep each game straight and figure out the points that it was trying to make about that game. It seemed to focus on games that are action based, which I don’t usually like to play. I have played World of Warcraft very briefly and that was mentioned in the first page. I have played Sims3 extensively and that was mentioned on the last page.
- How does this reading challenge/expand/contradict your definition of (digital) storytelling?
- This chapter brought home the fact that even digital storytelling and even storytelling through an unconventional source can affect a person’s emotions. We can come to care about the characters that we are playing and care about what happens to them.
- What additional scholarship, popular media, teaching resources, or other media are related to your developing understanding of both (digital) storytelling and this chapter?
- For this chapter I had to do some extra research on the games that it was talking about. I wanted to see pictures of the games so that I could better understand what the authors were talking about. After reading this chapter I am even more convinced that stories can be told in any medium, including in games with hundreds of players.
