This article is different from any of the others I've reviewed so far. Most of the others have been about how to improve writing. This one is about the business of writing, specifically about Walt Disney Studios. The article goes into great detail about the history that people know, or think they know, and what really might have happened. I haven't really studied the history of the studio before so I didn't know anything about Ub Iwerks. I had heard of Roy Disney, however. It seems like both of these men's achievements were highly glossed over since Walt was the one at the forefront. They say that the winner writes the history and that seems to be true in this case as well.
I enjoyed reading about the history of the company, especially things that I hadn't read about before. I didn't know that male managers were paid $300 per week but the women who were doing the painting were only paid $50 per week. There was also a strike in 1941 to protest working conditions and wages. We all think that working for Disney is bright and sunny but at that time it was not.
I found this article especially interesting because I worked for Disney on a temporary basis about 12 years ago. I worked for the catalog order department during Christmas time. My experience was a very good one. I was treated well and paid well. I actually really enjoyed it there. Hopefully things will stay the same as the company grows and the strike in 1941 set things on the right road.
